KNOWLEDGE IS POWER, of Chapter 4 of Kingdom of God volume 1
pages 36 to 44.
It is impossible for a man to be saved in ignorance. (D & C 131:6)
No matter when or where we are born, it is by gaining knowledge and understanding that we receive joy, advancement, and growth. Brigham Young explained:
The first great principle that ought to occupy the attention of mankind, that should be understood by the child and the adult, and which is the mainspring of all action, whether people understand it or not, is the principle of improvement. The principle of increase, of exaltation, of adding to that we already possess, is the grand moving principle and cause of the actions of the children of men. No matter what their pursuits are, in what nation they were born, with what people they have been associated, what religion they profess, or what politics they hold, this is the mainspring of the actions of the people, embracing all the powers necessary in performing the duties of life. (JD 2:91)
Without knowledge, intelligence, free agency and choices, we are idiots! Spirits born in the pre-existence were just like little children born in this world–completely helpless, totally dependent on others and without any agency. But as we grew older and began to learn, we could make our own choices and decisions. We selected our schooling, occupations, and friends. We also chose the kind of principles and standards we wanted to live by, and even the kind of kingdom we wanted to [37] live in. We voted for our government over there just as we vote for it here.
