I John 4:2-3, 13-17
“A Conquering Faith”
In this week’s lesson, the apostle John writes to his readers about false prophets and teachers. Many believers were conforming to the world’s standards, failing to stand up for Christ and compromising their faith. False teachers were plentiful, denying the incarnation (Jesus becoming human) of Jesus Christ (see I John 2:18-23) and accelerating the church’s downward slide away from the Christian faith. As part of John’s efforts to correct these serious errors, he reminded his readers that their continued trust in Jesus would lead to a conquering faith.
“And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him” (I John 4:16).
The truth of Scripture and of God is that Jesus Christ is to be confessed as the Son of God, the eternal life and Word that was with the Father from the beginning.
