“Abijah Challenges King Jeroboam”
II Chronicles 13:3-18
Our lesson for this week takes place after the death of King Rehoboam of Judah. After the death of King Solomon, the unified nation of Israel was divided into the Northern Kingdom of Israel composed of ten of the twelve tribes of Israel, and the Southern Kingdom of Judah composed of the other two tribes of Israel, Judah and Benjamin. These two nations were often at war with one another under the reign of king Jeroboam of Israel and king Rehoboam of Judah. Jeroboam was still king of Israel after the death of Rehoboam, king of Judah. Rehoboam’s son, Abijah became king of Judah and the two nations continued war with each other (see II Chronicles 13:2). Our lesson begins with Judah and Israel preparing to go to war.
