“Jesus Talks with a Samaritan”

 John 4:7-15, 28-30, 39-41

Imagine a strict Jew needing to travel from Galilee in the north to Judaea in the south. They would avoid going through Samaria because they wouldn’t want to become ceremoniously defiled. Instead, they would cross the Jordan River and travel on the eastern side to bypass Samaria. But Jesus deliberately chose to go through Samaria to reach an unsaved Samaritan woman. This week’s lesson text is an instructive passage for evangelists and indeed for all believers who are seeking to be effective witnesses for Jesus Christ.

Jesus and His disciples arrived in the city of Sychar in Samaria at about the sixth hour (12:00 noon). Being tired from the journey, Jesus stopped at Jacob’s well for water while His disciples went into Sychar to buy food (see John 4:5-6, 8). This is where our lesson begins
