While Shakespeare taught the world the range of English language expression, he never denied the beauty of the french language. This program refers to just such a word- ennui- the grand indifference. When citizens are indifferent to authority small minded men throughout history try acts of deparation, the exercise of power as tryanny. But I bring it only to illustrate another use of the term, far less muscular that power and leadership to talk about what ennui can do to a way of thinking.
Before we go running off in all directions, it would be helpful to think about this. Ennui is a mannerly way of saying ' I don't care'.
Should we know when this type of attitude settles in or presume we are immune to that stuff? If a few talk like this- what difference can it make in the big picture? The problem with indifference is that it spreads from one to another and leaves a trail behind.
