Railroad Tunnel at Tunnel Springs, Alabama
| Tunnel Springs in Monroe County
This is an abandoned railroad tunnel that’s located about 13 miles north of Monroeville, AL near the community of Tunnel Springs. Completed in 1899, this 840-foot-long tunnel was built by four crews of 15 men each working day and night using simple equipment. One crew is said to have worked from the north side while the other worked from the south. This abandoned train tunnel is now home to hundreds of thumb-sized bats.
This railroad tunnel is located between Tunnel Springs and Beatrice near the north end of Tunnel Hill Road. From Tunnel Springs, travel north on Hwy 21 approximately three miles and turn left on Tunnel Hill Road. Approximately 0.1 mile ahead is the railbed crossing on the Tunnel Hill Road (GPS coordinates 31.672130, -87.222627). The railroad tunnel is located approximately 0.5 south from this crossing.
