I. INTRODUCTION. Our lesson this week is a touching story of two disciples whose faith seemed to be dashed by the death of Christ, but whose hope was restored. It’s a wonderful story showing a reunion with the Living LORD.
II. THE LESSON BACKGROUND. It was Sunday, the first day of the week and during the evening of Jesus’ resurrection. Some of Jesus’ female followers had gone to His tomb to continue anointing His body for burial when they learned from angels that He had risen from the dead. As they were returning to the city, Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene who lingered at the tomb, and then He appeared to the women. He instructed them to go tell the apostles what they had seen and heard (see Matthew 28:8-10). When Peter and John heard the news, they ran to the tomb and found it empty but Jesus’ clothes were still laying there as if He was still in them. This sight caused Peter to begin to wonder about what had happened. This is where our lesson begins.
III. THE DISCIPLES ON THE EMMAUS ROAD (Luke 24:13-18)
