My first incredible guest, Susan Elmer, is a mother and professional with a fierce noble spirit and bountiful energy.
She's the president of FACES- an Autism support group: www.faces-autismsupport.org and mother of a 14 year old son with Aspergers.
Susan was voted the Atlantic County Woman of the year – 2011 and tirelessly advocates for families and children with autism. She produced a movie called Tim E to help others understand her son, Timmy.
Susan Elmer uses “Circle of Friends” to work professionally in many districts training peers to understand the person with autism. Peers are much more effective than adults in facilitating social skills.
Elmer works full time at Cape May County Special Services School District helping districts develop strategies to support students in inclusive education.
My second distinguished guest is Dr. Forwood. He received his doctorate degree from Western States Chiropractic College and developed one of the largest single clinical centers in Delaware during the 1980s.
Board Certified in Neurology in 1992, Forwood continued to work with patients with neurological problems.
Dr. Forwood opened a Brain Balance Center in Wayne, Pennsylvania to help children with neuro-behavioral deficits to improve their academic, social and behavioral functions using a drug-free approach.
An estimated 1 in 150 American children has some form of autism. Some research suggests autistic kids who get help early can overcome some of their deficits.
The social skills learned as a toddler may not be useful to a teen. Dr. Forwood will also discuss tips for parents and the benefits of the Brain Balance Program.
