This year the eight days of Chanukah begin on Tuesday, December 12th at sundown and will run through Wed., Dec. 20th until sundown. The tradition is that on the first night of Chanukah the flame of the menorah is lit, on the second night two, and so on. In this way we remember the 'growth' of the miracle. The additional Chanukah Torah readings are connected to the dedication of the Mishkan (Tabernacle) in the wilderness. Also, it is traditional to read from the Book of Maccabees.

Commentary:'We, O Antiochus, having accepted the Divine Law as the Law of our country, do not believe any stronger necessity is laid upon us than that of our obedience to the Law. (4 Macabbees 2:44)

Since Chanukah celebrates the victory of Maccabee forces over the Greeks and the re-livication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem it is a fighting holiday, in essence, during this time we call to mind the triumph of Faith in Virtue of Reason over the ways of Corruption and Tyranny. In such times, where egoistic immorality seems to be the societal norm it is also a time to reaffirm our commitment with Christ as the light of our lives, in Spirit and in Truth, and to resist being assimilated into a culture where moraless selfish indulgence seems to be the rule of life ; trusting that God will provide for us in our resolution.
