Our topic tonight is a follow-up show relating to Ep. 1, on Musicians and Suicide, as well as Ep. 9 (Holiday Depression), and Ep 16 (Artistic Mental Pathologies.) Tonight’s topic is focusing on Suicide generally, but in a lot more detail.

This topic has been socially and medically relevant for centuries, but is being brought up now because of a long list of recent events in our personal social circles, which have involved multiple suicides and attempts at self-harm. Such a powerful situation happening on a personal level (as opposed to a celebrity or public figure) can bring out debilitatingly powerful emotions. Family and close friends, and even those who self-harm, have a whirlwind of emotions about the topic - often deep guilt, rage, disbelief, self-blame, despair, and so on. We hope tonight’s episode will help people understand that many typical reactions they may have are normal and understandable, even if they may not be reality, and hopefully we can facilitate some of our listeners being able to help themselves or someone else, and maybe even save some lives.

We did not only a lot of the usual scientifically-based research for this episode, but also took extensive input on social media from dozens of people who either have been depressed,  contemplated self harm, attempted suicide, or been close to someone who has attempted or committed suicide. We promised them discretion to allow them to speak honestly with us, and we will anonymously share of their points on this topic tonight, as well.
