Tonight’s show is called, “Responsibility, Accountability, Blame, and Change.” This topic came about because of a 2017 social media event in the UK, where a 14-year-old girl committed suicide, and her father blamed social media for it. There has been recent news coverage due to some recent activity on the situation regarding Facebook being confronted with this case. We will be reading that article in its entirety and discussing the implications tonight.
To be clear, we absolutely are NOT saying that this situation is not tragic and horrible. What we ARE saying is that we want to help our listeners understand the psychology of, when humans are confronted with painful, difficult, and/or tragic situations, we frequently default to looking for some outside source to blame, that we can punish to make ourselves feel better. We ARE saying that the problem is not that simple.
