Atascadero, CA – Dr. Edward Smink is the author of The Soul of Caregiving: A Caregiver’s Guide to Healing and Transformation. In his work, Dr. Smink addresses “The Dance of Caregiving:” the tension between the caring for others and caring for yourself. Dr. Smink believes you can do both.

It is not entirely the caregiver’s fault in not developing skills of self-care, says Dr. Smink. Caregivers are notorious for not seeking self-care. Instead they paint the bars of their prison cell gold, believing their “Soul Pain” will just go away.

“It's against our culture to spend time for ourselves and develop skills of self-care. Our culture teaches us to believe we can do it all by ourselves, so we don't ask for help,” says Dr. Smink. “If we refuse to acknowledge what's going on within ourselves, we are ticking-time bombs.”

A survivor of Compassion Fatigue himself, Dr. Smink had to learn the value of setting appropriate boundaries and the need for self-care the hard way.

While most think of caregivers as healthcare: doctors, nurses, therapists, social workers, and chaplains, Dr. Smink has expanded the definition of caregiver to include everyone.
