Mike Erlin is a human capital technology veteran & entrepreneur, with two decades experience spanning the coal-face of e-learning with DigitalThink with pioneers such as Josh Bersin, to leadership roles in innovative technology companies such as DigitalThink, Blackboard, Cornerstone & now, AbilityMap.

AbilityMap was born at the intersection of Mike’s business & athletic passions. As a former America’s Cup Sailor & Offensive Lineman for the Oregon Ducks, Erlin saw how much data went into the selection of a team of athletes & how matching the individual to the role, always hand-in-glove, was absolutely critical. Turn to hiring in the business world & there was nothing even close. People-focus not role-focus was the standard. With hiring managers consistently reporting they would not rehire one third of the people they’ve employed, it was clear to Mike that something needed to change. Then a chance meeting with employment industry veteran & behavioural psychologist, Kevin Chandler, put them both on a path to re-imagine how hiring is done.

The result was AbilityMap, a criterion-based technology that determines what is actually necessary to perform a specific job at the highest level & then find or develop the people who can do just that. It takes the ‘art’ out of hiring, the questions out of talent management & replaces it with an objective, data-based model. By measuring the objective drivers of success in a job, with the same degree of detail as candidates, personnel decisions can finally be based on evidence rather than emotion. Employees are freed to find the best jobs for their potential, productivity goes up, & Human Resources becomes a profit centre.
