As we watch the 2016 Olympics in Rio, we're inspired by the accomplishments of Simone Biles, Katie Ledecky, Michael Phelps and Simone Manual. On this episode of Making A Difference, we meet someone inspirational in her own right: Rebecca S. Alleyne MD, MHA, FACS.

Dr. Alleyne is a Los Angeles native who grew up in the Crenshaw District. A graduate of Howard University, she became interested in medicine at a young age after watching her mother (who is also a physician) dedicate her life to healing the sick.

As a young medical student, she became intrigued with breast cancer surgery and completed her residency at Brooklyn Hospital Center in Brooklyn, NY. After her residency she completed a fellowship in breast cancer surgery at USC/Norris Cancer Center.

In addition to treating her patients with tender loving care as a breast surgeon in Los Angeles, Dr. Alleyne has participated in the following endeavors:

Educating women and men on lifestyle changes that help prevent cancer
Previously lead walking groups in the Windsor Hills area
Served as a run coordinator for the Black Girls Run running club for two years
Promotes healthy eating, tobacco cessation and alcohol moderation via her various social media outlets

Dr. Alleyne is quite the athlete, completing several marathons, half marathons and triathlons over the years.

Her most compelling project is currently underway: a revolutionary study on how active Black women overcome haircare as a barrier to exercise and ways to increase the number of minutes per week they exercise. The study has been accepted for presentation at the American Public Health Association in November 2016.
