Based on a true story.
Enslaved in Charleston, SC, during the American Civil War, Robert Smalls yearned for freedom. He didn't want to leave his family in slavery. The only way to get everyone out was to steal the gunboat, the CSS Planter, that he and seven of his friends were forced to work on. But Charleston harbor was full of mines - mines that he and his friends had been forced to set in the water. There were also five Confederate forts and batteries filled with soldiers who would blow sky-high any ship they suspected of carrying escaping slaves to freedom. How could Robert and Hannah ever hope to be free?
Afraid for his family, Robert contemplated going alone. Hannah simply said to him, "Where you go, I go. And where you die, I die."
Everyone who hears the story of Robert and Hannah Smalls says, “This NEEDS to be a movie!”
