May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental Health is a concern here in the United States. As a way to educate individuals and provide awareness today's show is focused on Gender and Mental Health. Although there appear to be gender bias in the treatment of psychological disorders. When it comes to Mental Health related diagnoses there appears to be a difference between genders.

Why is this of interest? Mental illness is under diagnosed by many doctors. Individuals also appear to be reluctant to seek professional help. Nearly 20 percent of the American population suffer from depression. Mental illness affect both men and women however men are less likely to talk about their feelings, symptoms or seek professionalhelp.

Unipolar depression is predicted to be the second leading cause of global disability and is twice as common in women. Men appear to have a significantly higher rate of suicide, substance use disorder and ADHD.

A study published by The American Psychological Association indicate that while men attend to have more issues towards substance abuse or antisocial disorders. It is also indicated that they are also more likely to externalize their emotions which tends to lead more towards aggressive, impulsive, coercive and none compliant behaviors. Women on ther other hand appear to be more likely diagnosed with anxiety or depression. They also tend to internalize their emotions.
