Rep. Kevin McCarthy has cut off his nose to spite his face. As promised, the GOP House majority is wasting no time in trying to eliminate Social Security and Medicare. The Debt Ceiling fight rages on as a handful of MAGA Republicans are holding America hostage. The Crazy MAGA Caucus will never compromise with Democrats, as they want to slash social programs to "balance the federal budget".

The original Social Security Act (1935), and the current version of the Act, as amended, encompasses several social welfare and social insurance programs.The average monthly Social Security benefit for November 2022 was $1,551. The total cost of the Social Security program for the year 2021 was $1.145 trillion or about 5% of U.S. GDP. Social Security is funded primarily through payroll taxes. Wage and salary earnings in covered employment, up to an amount specifically determined by law, are subject to the Social Security payroll tax.Social Security is nearly universal, with 94% of individuals in paid employment in the United States working in covered employment.

Congress enacted Medicare under Title XVIII of the Social Security Act to provide health insurance to people age 65 and older, regardless of income or medical history. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed theSocial Security Amendments of 1965 into law on July 30, 1965.
