Sex addicts and partners of sex addicts can have mental illnesses that complicate diagnosis and recovery. One of these mental illnesses is borderline personality disorder, or BPD. BPD is commonly associated with sex addiction and makes sex addiction much more difficult to diagnose and treat because the criteria for both diagnoses overlap. BPD is considered a severe personality disorder often caused by cumulative trauma experienced in early and middle childhood. Carol the Coach will interview Geoff Goodman who not only is a CSAT but a proffessor of psychology. He will be explaining some of the symptoms of BPD which include frantic attempts to avoid abandonment, chronic feelings of emptiness, and impulsivity, which can include self-injurious behaviors and sexual promiscuity. It is important that mental health professionals screen for BPD when they assess sex addicts and partners of sex addicts. BPD is extremely challenging to treat in psychotherapy because patients diagnosed with BPD often attempt to push away their therapists with hostile behaviors. Fortunately, there are several evidence-based treatment models for BPD that, when combined with a 12-step program for sex addiction or codependency, can help the patient to find a successful path of recovery.
