"Liar, liar, pants on fire"~
There is an old saying that goes, "How do you know when a politician is lying? When their lips are moving!" And this is also true for pastors, teachers, preachers, medical practitioners, fiduciaries, or anyone in a position of responsibility for others that knowingly lies to further tor protect heir position, or income, at the expense of their charges. This is also true in relationships between family members or friends. If a person KNOWINGLY lies to save their own skin at the expense of another then they are betraying a sacred trust that cannot have a remedy, even if they subsequently ask for forgiveness. The damage is done, unreparable, and irrevocable, in spite of their sincere and heart felt apology. The person wronged may have the character that allows the to forgive, but by the very nature of the LIE they can never forget.
It is for this reason that it is critical to KNOW whether what you believe to be true actually IS true; because if it is not, and you teach it, or tell it as if it is true, you may never be able to undo the damage that belief has done to another person that believed it because of you. And this is especially true when it comes to spiritual truth. There are lots of 'truths' out there that people sincerely believe, but which one IS true, without question?
Jesus answered, "You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." John 18:37
What Jesus told Pilate gives the parameters for truth; If the words come from Jesus they are true; if they don't, they aren't.. But there are writers in the Bible that never knew Jesus personally while He was here on earth, they never heard Him speak, or saw His miracles, and yet they are held as authorities of truth. Be careful of them!
