November is National Adoption Awareness Month. Approximately 135,000 children are adopted in the United States annually. Adoption, which used to carry a stigma and an atmosphere of secrecy, has changed in many ways over the years to match the changing shape of our society. Many adopted children come from the foster care system, and international adoption has become more common over the last decades.
What are the pros and cons of adoption? What are the steps prospective adoptive parents should take? What is the purpose and function of the foster care system? Should the church play a role in the lives of adoptive families?
Adoption and foster care advocate Katie Cruice Smith is a mom to three adopted children. Katie and her husband are licensed foster parents and the founders of their church’s orphan ministry. An author also, Katie’s children’s book entitled Why Did You Choose Me? addresses one of the questions that lurk in the minds of adoptive children.
