Tonight, on It's Real Talk Radio, we will be acknowledging what the month of October symbolizes; Breast Cancer Awareness and Domestic Violence Awareness. Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence both have tremendous impact on so many lives and we feel it's important to put a microscope on both. An estimated 42,000 women die from breast cancer annually in the United States Alone. An estimated 4.8 million women suffer intimate partner related physical assaults and rapes and 2.9 million men are victims of physical assault from their partners.
Most of us know at least 1 victim of breast cancer and several victims of domestic violence. The pink ribbon is representative of Breast Cancer Awareness month and we must stand in solidarity with the victims, alongside their friends and family, as this is a never ending fight! Symptoms of Breast Cancer include a lump in the breast, bloody discharge from the nipple, and changes in the shape or texture of the nipple or breast. There are 5 stages of Breast Cancer with Stage 0 being the least severe and Stage 4 being the most severe. Unfortunately, most people who have Stage 4 Breast Cancer don't live long.
Nearly half of all female homicide victims are killed by a current or former dating partner, according to a 2017 study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Black women in the U.S. are twice as likely as white women to be fatally shot by an inmate partner, gun control advocates say, and young black women are almost three times more likely to be shot and killed by an intimate partner than white women in the same age group. This is undeniably troubling and the need for focus on these issues is greater than ever! This is why we found it imperative to have this discussion.
October is a very important month because it sheds light on these issues We as allies must continue to support Breast Cancer victims and stand with victims of Domestic Violence. Let's talk about it!
