The holidays are prime time for giving and receiving. We focus on "year-end giving," knowing that it is the most opportune time for individuals to invest with gratitude in the issues they care about. But what happens after we receive those gifts? Yes, we thank our donors (and quickly!) but what happens next? Stewardship, one of the oldest concepts in philanthropy, is also the most neglected. Why we neglect it is complicated: too little time, limited resources, stretched staff -- all excuses that in fact are not donor-focused which is what we simply must be.
