First Lady Michelle Obama had a very enlightening conversation with media mogul Oprah Winfrey during the conference on Women n teh Media recently held in Washington DC. What the world thinks of African American women, African women, Asian women, Hispanic women, European women, all women, comes from images in the media. How much do we control how we are portrayed? Why is there still too much global disrespect for the intelligence, talent, skills and leadership abilities of women? African American women have been particularly scorned by repetitive depictions as unwed welfare mothers with low morals, hoochie mamas girating to the beat on a vulgar music video, dyed weave wearing ghetto girls, and every kind of derogatory stereotype in between, although two of the most powerful women in the world, First Lady Michelle Obama and TV Network owner Oprah Winfrey certainly reflect none of that. What should we do to take control of and remake the media image of women to reflect dignity, honor and respect? Kai El Zabar, Executive Editor of the Chicago Defender, Chinta Strausberg, Publisher of 316 Magazine, Myeka Bevel, author of The Lunaqueen series and Afrika Porter with Urban Broadcast Media and head of Afrika Enterprises join us today to discuss the media image of women, particularly African American Women. What power do we have to make it better?
