At one time the building trades, carpentry, plumbing, electrical installation, drywalling, masonry, etc., were taught in iner city trade schools, preparing students to be able to build and maintain their own homes. With the absence of these schools and the removal of classes like Woodshop from the public schools, homeowners dont have the skills to maintain their property and when things break down, if they are going through financial challenges, houses fall into disrepair. This creates the decrepit condition of neighborhoods as seen in urban communities across the country. American Allied Workers Laborers International Union President Tom Harris joins us today to talk about how members of the trade unions can share their knowlege and teach home building skills so that urban residents can become self reliant, self sufficient and self employed in the building and maintenance of their own homes.
