Violence is often a common expression of anger, frustration and even fear. But is it a healthy mental state or is it a manifestation of mental illness? There is funding for treatment of mental illness, and if violence were to be reclassified as a mental illness, people could get the help they need rather than to be punished for being sick. Could legislation defining violence as mental illness transform our society from being punishment-driven to being healing-driven? How would that change the way our police, legal system and criminal justice system operate? Would it raise the level of human compassion we have for people suffering from emotional distress?
