It is currently against the law to steal, that is, taking something from someone without their permission. But what if it was against the law to refuse to share if you have an abundance and others have a need? What if it was against the law to hoard money, food, clothing, when others are poor, hungry, and unclothed? What if it was against the law to refuse health services to someonebecause they couldn’t pay? Can compassion be mandated by law? Can fairness and equal distribution of resources be enforced by a government decree? Today we examine the words of a proposed law to see if moral conscience, compassion and a commitment to the humane treatment of all beings can be inserted as the foundation for the interpretation and enforcement of all constitutional law.
