Cursed Women: Your desire shall be for a man to rule over you.

In the Holy Bible we read that women were cursed to have pain in bringing forth children and that they would be ruled over by their husbands. Why was  this curse given and what was life like before the curse?  Can women overcome this curse and if yes how?  Is the current state of women reflective of these curses and in what way?
