Several years ago, I set about compiling an ebook entitled Black Health. I looked for Black health practitioners, e.g. people of African heritage who were healthcare providers. I found a few complimentary therapists, but they were not working with Black clients. One said to me pointedly, "I work with white people because they care about their health".
Is this true? Do we really not care about our health? And if not, why not? I see this as a mental health issue.
Members of the Black community are more likely to experience certain health problems, including Type 2 Diabetes and high blood pressure, as well as mental health issues. Why is this? Is it because we are not looking after ourselves and each other? During slavery, our ancestors often had to eat the worst food - what the white folks wouldn't eat - but they evolved ways to make this food healthy and nutritious. Do we really not value ourselves anymore?
Then there is the scandal of the Black maternal deaths. In the UK, Black women are FOUR TIMES more likely to die in childbirth than white women. If we really believe Black lives matter, we have to make it a priority.
