Illinois Senate Bill 564 was signed into law in August of 2021, making January 17th Muhammad Ali Day. Muhammad Ali was born January 17, 1942 in Louisville Kentucky as Cassius Clay. This year marks the 80th anniversary of his birth. As an athlete, he transformed the world of boxing, with his style and charisma. As a U.S. citizen, he transformed the political climate of the times, openly refusing to be drafted into the Viet Nam war, and being willing to lose his Championship title rather than participate in an unjust war. His courageous stand gave fuel to the anti war movement, and catapulted him into worldwide fame and popularity. A number of films have been made on his life (including one in which he played himself) and most notably the film "Ali" starring actor Will Smith. Today we celebrate his life and legacy and examine his impact on the global movement for peace.
