On April 15, 2022, Chicago celebrated the 100th year anniversary of the birth of Mayor Harold Washington, the first African American elected to the office, whose victory launched a new spirit of empowerment for those whose needs had long been neglected in the city. Darva Watkins and Min. Robert Plump give us a recap of the day's activities. We launched PANDEMIC FARMS on April 15, 2020, seeing the trashed vacant lots, and people going hungry because of joblessness and a feeling of powerlessness. We recognized that the greatest need in the urban environment today is to learn how to use the wealth and power that already exists right under our feet. What if urban dwellers turned that abandoned land into the power of agribusiness, growing food, feeding its citizens, creating a viable economy and renewing a sense of empowerment? Today we look at the PANDEMIC Farms project. PANDEMIC stands for Producing Agricultual Nourishment Developing Economies Making Independent Communities. We'll be joined by Myeka Bevel, a resident of the farming community of Pembroke Illinois, as we prepare for a Springtime renewal of hope in the power of self determination.
