In many cultures women have been conditioned to be financially dependent upon men. Women were raised to prepare to be house wives and to seek a mate who could take care of them financially, which required little education on the woman's part. The man's role was to work outside the home and take care of his wife and children. This worked out fine until the husband became incapacitated, passed away, or ended the marriage. How did a single woman support herself? In many places across the world, the feminization of poverty is a way of life for unmarried women, many of whom end up homeless, sometimes while struggling to care for their children. It's time to change this dynamic. Women need to go into relationships as fully equal partners, not as dependents, fully capable of living financially independent adult lives. How do we create a new cultural expectation of an equal partnership in relationships and still teach men to take care of the financial responsibilities of a family?  Mama Joy joins us today, along with entrepreneur Rashidah Ali to examine ways to eliminate female poverty and homelessness.
