Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated on the 19th of June to commemorate the emancipation of the enslaved people in the U.S. It was first celebrated in Texas where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, which ended with the surrender of General Robert E. Lee on April 9, 1965, those still being held in bondage were finally informed of the terms of the 1962 Emancipation Proclamation. How are we commemorating this history today?
