The Life Partnership Contract: Can It Be A Solution to Broken Families?

 Marriage as an institution has gone through some profound changes over the last century.  Much of the dynamics of marriage changed after World War II, when women went to work outside the home. They stopped looking to marry men who could "take care of them" financially, and started looking for someone they could love and work in partnership with.  With both husband and wife earning their own money, divorce was an easier decision for women who were unhappy, and sometimes for men as well, because there was less guilt about leaving a woman who could take care of herself. But the rise in broken families has wreaked such havoc on our society, and statistics show that high crime areas coincide with high rates of single parenthood. Life as it was pre-1950s will not return, and the financial nightmare of divorce makes many adults choose to remain single and just co-habitate. But children need some kind of legal protection and couples need to define a greater intention for their union besides having a live-in sex partner. What if we could agree on a contract defining the marital agreement, with opportinities for expansion and an out clause that enabled the partners to end the relationship peacefully and without court intervention?
