Mark Bauerlein is an English professor at Emory University and Senior Editor of First Things magazine. He is the author of numerous books, includingNegrophobia: A Race Riot in Atlanta, 1906. Most recently he is an editor, along with Adam Bellow, of The State of the American Mind: 16 Leading Critics On The New Anti-Intellectualism.

Joan Waugh is professor history at the University of California at Los Angeles. She is the author of three books, including The memory of the Civil War in American Culture, Wars within a War: Controversy and Conflict over the America, and her latest, U.S. Grant: American Hero, American Myth.
