It is Wellness Wednesday at Aging Younger where the alternatives to the medical pharmaceutical sickness industry matter!
Some of the words that look similar and sound similar can be exact opposites; such as Lectin and Lecithin. Also the one that can turn bad in some people can also be great for the health of many, most of the time. Lectins were first discovered in castor bean casings, which contain the lectin ricin. Ricin is so toxic that a dose the size of a few grains of salt can kill an adult if injected or inhaled; while lectins in small amounts can actually provide valuable health benefits to some, in the immune system as well as assisting inflammation modulation; problems may only arise when high amounts of these lectins are consumed. Now passing gas from eating too many beans might just be a clue as to the fact that you have eaten too many of those Lectins.

Foods as healthy for you as avocados contain a type of lectin agglutinin, which is certainly not bad for you. Beans on the other hand not only contain Lectins that can cause problems for many people, they also have the added drawback of being high in net carbs, and are therefore, best avoided in the initial stages of a ketogenic diet, which is well known for being a low carb diet, where the body produces ketones in the liver to be used as energy. So it would be a mistake to assume all lectins are bad for you. Tune in Wednesday May 24 at 7:30 PM for THE REST OF THE STORY.
