Deardra Shuler, the host of Topically Yours, will interview Judy Mann, of the singing group, the Chiffons. Originals Chiffons: Judy Craig (Mann), Pat Bennett and Barbara Lee.The Chiffons formed in 1960 while in Monroe High School in the Bronx. The lead singer at the time was 14 year old Judy Craig, who sang along with Patricia Bennett and Barbara Lee, both 13. They met writer/manager Ronnie Mack at the after-school center. Up to that time Mack's claim to fame was a 1959 local Philadelphia hit by Little Jimmy (Rivers) and the Tops (V-Tone Records) entitled "Puppy Love." The Chiffons began recording in 1962, when Ronnie Mack, while marketing his songs met producers Phil and Mitch Margo, Jay Seigel, and Hank Medress a.k.a. The Tokens. They liked Mack's song, "He's So Fine." Mack brought in the Chiffons to sing it. The song was released on Laurie Records. That's when the intro line of "doo lang doo lang doo lang" became the newest nonsensical addition to the rock 'n roll vernacular. "He's So Fine" moved to #1 in America on both the Pop and R&B charts, reaching #16 in England. "One Fine Day" hit next. The Chiffons also recorded "My Block" under the group name the Pennies, and it reached the charts only three weeks after "One Fine Day." In 1963 the Chiffons; charted top 40 in September with the catchy "A Love So Fine". The group was greatly in demand, honing their craft on "American Bandstand", "Hullabaloo" and "Shindig." They also did some Great Shakes commercials. In the Fall of 1963, the Chiffons released "I Have A Boyfriend," considered by some to be their best recording. The Chiffons will be appearing at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts as part of their Unforgettable Doo Wop show.
