Host Adilah Barnes interviews Denise Nicholas who will receive the Integrity Award, presented to an artist who has brought credibility and dignity to her work. During the most violent days of the Civil Rights Movement, she apprenticed with the Free Southern Theater in Mississippi and Louisiana. Subsequently, she performed off-Broadway in the then-controversial “Viet Rock.”  Nicholas performed in multiple productions at the Negro Ensemble Company in NY.  Later, she performed with the Los Angeles Actors Theatre and achieved national fame on television in ‘Room 222” and “In The Heat Of The Night.” Ms. Nicholas appeared in feature films with Sidney Poitier, Bill Cosby, William Marshall and Dean Martin. Her award-winning novel, “Freshwater Road,” inspired by her involvement in the civil rights struggle, has been optioned for motion picture development. She contributed to the book “Hands on the Freedom Plow: Personal Accounts by Women in SNCC.”
