Host Deardra Shuler talks with Matthew Gilsenan of The Celtic Tenors regarding their upcoming Saturday, March 16th concert at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts in the Bronx at 8:00 pm. Listeners can experience St Patrick's Day with the Irish music of The Celtic Tenors. Tenor Daryl Simpson is known for his high notes, James Nelson (known for his operatic style) and Matthew Gilsenan (pop). These tenors have found a way to overcome their Protestant-Catholic backgrounds to combine together their considerable talents harmoniously.
Matthew Gilsenan was born into a hard-working farming family in North Meath. Raised by parents who shared a great love for music, from the great composers to obscure Irish folk, Matthew developed a love for the artform. Classical training within the Sisters of Mercy convent at age 10, Matthew benefitted from some of the great Irish and Scottish teachers. Although he studied opera and sang classically, he remained true to his childhood love of contemporary Irish music which inspires him to this day.
The three tenors have performed throughout the world, recorded eight albums, made television appearance including a PBS special utilizing a style that is nothing short of Irish cool as they modernize the traditional tenor mold. Tickets can be purchased at the Lehman Center Box Office by calling 718.960.8833 or online at www.Lehmancenter.org.
