Episode 342: The Mandela Effect in the Bible, Part Two--The Angel of Death
in Christianity
In their new series, pastors Erica, Sarah, and Steve explore characters we would have SWORN were in the Bible, but turn out to be fictions, mistaken recollections, or all-out mash-ups of other biblical characters into something new. That phenomenon of collectively misremembering and event or person is sometimes called the Mandela Effect, and it turns out we do it quite a bit with the Bible. That's especially true when we get our mental picture of Bible stories from pop culture, movies, and TV shows, rather than wrestling with the actual text. And in this episode we look at a classic example from the story of the Exodus. When Moses sets the enslaved Hebrews free from the clutches of the evil Pharaoh, the last straw that finally pushes the Egyptian king to release them is the death of the firstborn of every Egyptian family. But who or what is responsible for those deaths? In pop culture we have invented a figure called "the angel of death" as the entity who has been given this dirty work to do, but in the storytelling of Exodus itself, it's God who strikes down the firstborn. So what difference does it make, and where do we see ourselves in this story? Join this conversation to explore all these questions, along with some pop culture signposts ranging from The Prince of Egypt and Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments to Game of Thrones and American Gods. Join us for the conversation here on Crazy Faith Talk!

On Christian Nationalism -- The Parker J Cole Show
in Christianity
When I was recording this show with my guest today, he asked me the question: "What do you consider Christian nationalism?"
I gave an answer and in his typical way, he didn't necessarily respond to the question. He just wanted to see what I thought Christian nationalism was.
To that end, by the time we finished this recording, my definition was nothing compared to what he said.
In this episode, we delve into the arguments against Christian nationalism, but not without nuance. My guest, apologist and podcast Cody Libolt, peels back the veil on what this is and how we as Christian should respond.

His Abounding Grace With Min. Van: Pursue Your Calling (Romans 8:28-31)
in Christianity
His Abounding Grace With Min. Van: Pursue Your Calling (Romans 8:28-31) Romans 8:28-31 KJV And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. [29] For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. [30] Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. [31] What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

‘GO UP HIGHER’ Luke 14:10 'Fire' The Gospel Experience w/ Ron E. Jefferson
in Christianity
"When we read Luke 14:10 our LORD JESUS gave a parable that is so appropriate for Christians of all ages. HE spoke against the need that we at times have to be the chiefest among all others. How we clamour for notoriety, certain recognitions which translate into certain places of high dignity and honor. Our LORD JESUS directs our intentions to reach higher by going lower. HUMILITY is the key to elevation from GOD. So very much unlike the ways of mankind! My very special guest is Gospel Artist MOG Tracy Satterwhite."

Deepertruth: Stand in the Gap With Us and Saint Joseph of Cupertino
in Christianity
Stand in the Gap With Us and Saint Joseph of Cupertino 9/18/2023
Joseph of Cupertino was a Conventual Franciscan Friar (OFM Conv.) and is recognized and honored as a Christian mystic and saint. He is the patron saint of aviation, astronauts, mental handicaps, test taking, and students.
During Mass or prayer, he would often be lifted from his feet—he was observed levitating more than 70 times. The experience of levitation is a physical expression of the deep prayer that raises the heart and mind to God. In Joseph's case, a number of his levitations were well-documented.
Joseph of Cupertino is most famous for levitating at prayer. Already as a child, Joseph showed a fondness for prayer. After a short career with the Capuchins, he joined the Conventual Franciscans. Following a brief assignment caring for the friary mule, Joseph began his studies for the priesthood. Though studies were very difficult for him, Joseph gained a great deal of knowledge from prayer. He was ordained in 1628.
Joseph’s tendency to levitate during prayer was sometimes a cross; some people came to see this much as they might have gone to a circus sideshow. Joseph’s gift led him to be humble, patient, and obedient, even though at times he was greatly tempted and felt forsaken by God. He fasted and wore iron chains for much of his life.
The friars transferred Joseph several times for his own good and for the good of the rest of the community. He was reported to and investigated by the Inquisition; the examiners exonerated him.
