Too many times as a single black mother raising son I have heard the comments of how my son would grow up and be feminine because I was raising him without a father in the home. Gender identity and roles in the black family have always been and continue to be a highly debated topic. Parental and societal influence leaves lasting impressions on young children who grow up to become adults .I found a wonderful story that centers around this very topic! Please join Denise Bolds, MSW and Dr. Daniel Black, author of “Perfect Peace.” Dr. Black is a father as well as an Associate Professor of English and African Studies at Clark Atlanta University. Perfect Peace is his third book and is now going into its SECOND printing!. http://us.macmillan.com/author/danielblack Perfect Peace, the heartbreaking portrait of a large, rural southern family’s attempt to grapple with their mother’s desperate decision to make her newborn son into the daughter she will never have. But that ain’t what you was supposed to be. So, from now on, you gon’ be a boy. It’ll be a little strange at first, but you’ll get used to it, and this’ll be over after while.” From this point forward, his life becomes a bizarre kaleidoscope of events. Meanwhile, the Peace family is forced to question everything they thought they knew about gender, sexuality, unconditional love, and fulfillment. Get Ready to Be Empowered!!!
