The discussion of educating the masses especially those who are living in the Black - African American community has been a discussion of value for years. For years, young black females and males have found little information to strengthen their pride in black icons.  Authors, have a opportunity to correct this imagery of non-existent icons and have a greater opportunity to present the names of characters based on African individuals and African Countries including the names of African Americans icons.  I used the last name of Olaudah Equiano, known for most of his life as Gustavus Vassa, was a writer and abolitionist from the Eboe region of the Kingdom of Benin. As a freedman in London, Equiano supported the British abolitionist movement. He was part of the  Sons of Africa, an abolitionist group composed of  Africans living in Britain, in 1780s, he published his autobiography. His character is a major figure in leading the fight against evil in the world today in one of my books.  I used the name of Mauritania for one of my female characters in another amazing story of mine.
Mauritania, officially the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, is a country in Northwest Africa.  I believe not only do we teach and educate, but we share for history.  Julius Nyerere once said and I took what he said to heart.

The war against ignorance, poverty, and disease is our own war and it can only be won by our own sweat and toil.

Maggie Lena Walker said in 1904 Eternal vigilance is the price of success. I took her words to heart.

I believe as a author I have a moral responsibility to create and share interesting characters and images related to my culture.
