A record-breaking 197 people in Maricopa County, Arizona died from heat-related causes in 2019 alone. So far in 2020, the Maricopa County Health Department has confirmed 30 heat-related deaths, while investigating an additional 243.

Over the past 30 years, heat has accounted for more fatalities on average than any other weather-related disaster in the U.S., according to the National Weather Service. And although these deaths are more likely to occur in desert cities, the warming climate that helps drive them will likely only get worse
