If an infant is bottle fed, chances are high he/she maybe put to bed with a bottle to make him/her fall asleep fast. Putting an infant to bed with a bottle will lead to decayed baby teeth. The contents of the bottle are usually milk, infant formula, a sugary liquid, which contain a carbohydrate. The bacteria in the mouth ferment the carbohydrate and produce acids, lowering pH of the mouth. Bacteria remove minerals from the tooth surface resulting in decay. Infants who fall asleep with a bottle in the mouth, the process is made worse. The decayed teeth must be removed, which is extremely painful. As the permanent teeth grow, they are misaligned, discoloured and damaged, destroying the child’s smile for life.
