With sky-high percentages of recidivism and repeat offenders being reported, the effectiveness of rehabilitation is not very high. If longterm sentences that have a definitive end date are designed to reform a criminal so that he/she will return to society, perhaps it may be more effective if some small but relevant environmental adjustments can be made to promote behavioral reform. One great example of a small but crucial tidbit is the permitting of families to visit the incarcerated individual. The implied intent is that the prisoner has some sense of civilization, some connection to normal life, even for a hour or two. Yet, the visiting area is donned with prison decor, armed guards, restricted physical contact, and saturated with thw high risk that some danger may present itself and cause harm. Are the inmates seeing their families being inspired to be rehabilitated, or are they and their families being systematically programmed to adjust to institutionalized life?
