NYPD rookie Officer Joseph Essig was under fire for being caught on video groping a woman in an Atlantic City casino. As the son of veteran Police Chief James Essig however, he avoided any penalties as a sexual offender, he continues to work as an officer of the NYPD, and what is probably the most deplorable of all--the sexual element of the allegation was removed and he was charged for a "Health Code" violation which came with a $1,000 fine. Perhaps the added slap on the wrist and the "order" to stay away from the victim was a bonus. Cincinatti veteran officer Dwight Pewett was accused of sexual misconduct and after an investigation was launched into the matter, a mass of victims reported felony sexual misconduct by the officer, although he had no record of complaints or disciplinary actions in his personnel file. He still remains employed. Sexual crimes are repeatedly disregarded, loosely if ever prosecuted, the perpetrators are never on trial--even during their trials, because society refuses to believe that sex should ever be included as a criminal element. This age-old practice of disregarding sexual violations as a crime repeatedly sends the message that rape doesn't exist, and therefore our police officers no longer need to enforce a law, they are fully allowed to engage in breaking it.
