Host Marsha Joiner

Guest Steven Garratt shares the story of his Mom, Margaret Mary Ann Garratt who was 90 in Oregon. She was living alone until she had a stroke in April 2015. That would be the beginning of the loss of her independence and ultimately her life. Instead of giving her a chance to recover, her POA decided it wasn't worth the time, money and effort.  August 25, 2015 her POA called in hospice who immediately began giving her opioids and antipsychotics (methadone, oxycodone, haldol and seroquel).  She commented to Steven that she was in big trouble as if she knew that would be the end, not from the stroke but from the toxic drugs.  Five days later on August 31, 2015 she lost the battle. Steven did his best to save her but was outnumbered by siblings who did not share his optimism.

Typically with hospice, the toxic one size fits all drugs is what kills the patient, not any disease. The patient doesn't stand a chance once the drugs are started which causes the patient to go into a coma and not be able to communicate, eat, or drink and they die from the drugs, starvation and dehydration.  Nothing compassionate or pleasant about this death. Don't be fooled by the "they died peacefully in their sleep!"
