One could compare the evolution of the consciousness to a tree, whereby the visible part - namely the trunk and the crown - embodies the external realm of life, while the roots symbolise the inner realm. If the external and internal growth is in balance, then we have a firmly rooted tree which withstands the wind and weather. But if an imbalance emerges between the inner and outer, then the tree collapses in stormy weather, because the roots are laid out too flat.
