Though I lived in Chicago, I can honestly say that in my early 20's I was a member of the Southern Baptist church. Perhaps you were, too. Perhaps you still are and don't know it.
Even though Americans have freedom of religion and our separation of church and state, how much church dogma has infected the thinking of our political leaders? We'll be discussing two NPR stories from the summer of 2009 that feel oddly relevant to today's national discourse. We'll also be discussing separating immigrant children from their parents, a hot topic in the news that is ALSO not news: I'll be talking about a story from The New York Times published 11 years ago, when George W. was still president.
Here's a question: If INS considers letting foreign children keep ONE parent with them instead of separating them from both parents, which parent do YOU think should remain with the child, mother or father? Why? Do you think INS will choose, based on the child's best interest? Do you think this practice could be used to set precedent in our family courts nationwide? Why or why not? Please call in.
