Urban Therapy with Sun #23 Talking Black or talking White

When you call a person that you have never seen or talked to before do you assume that you know what race or ethnicity they belong to? Many times it's obvious but there are times when we are totally fooled by someone because they may use terminology or accentuate their words in a way that sounds like a different race or ethnicity than the belong to.

Before the 90's, there was a such thing as talking Black and talking White. that meant to some that if you were Black and you used proper language that you talked White. If you were White and you spoke a lot of slang or mispronounced many words then you were talking Black.

Is this a fair way of evaluating speech between races?

Is it insulting to one race while giving undeserved credit to another?

Do all White people use proper English? Do all Black people speak improper English? What is proper English exactly especially in The U.S.?

Is it fair to judge people's intelligence based on this criteria? Do we do that by mistake or on purpose?
