As a Professor it is important to have EI. Gone are the days of lecturing and not having an emotional connection with the students.  Changes in the environment and the audience (students) demand these connections.

Universities are seeing younger student populations and smaller class sizes; it has become imperative to retain current students through engagement and emotional connections.  The younger generation is more emotionaliy hungry and craves that attention in the classroom and their careers.  They require more direct connections with their professors; this can fill two needs one for student retention and engagement and the other as a marketing tool as the newer generation are prone to influence from their peers or strangers.

Emotional connection with the students helps both the Professor and student to develop relationships that inspire and motivate.
